Hair and Nail Disorders

Many people spend a good deal of time and money in salons to make sure their hair and nails look attractive.  But, hair can thin and fall out, while nails can become infected, diseased and discolored.  Besides the desire to look attractive, patients must also be concerned with whether certain hair and nail disorders signify more serious underlying medical conditions.

Hair disorders can be caused by a variety of factors, including aging, genetics, hormonal imbalances, stress, skin disorders, or even medical conditions such as iron deficiency or thyroid disease.  Whether you’re suffering from age-related male pattern baldness, excessive hair growth, or unexplained loss or thinning of your hair, Dr. Seidenberg can help you determine the underlying cause and an appropriate treatment plan. Depending on your individual situation, Dr. Seidenberg may prescribe oral medication, such as Propecia®, topical treatments, or other treatments to address the cause of your hair disorder.

Nail disorders also have many causes, including fungal infections or skin conditions; trauma or injury; or even an underlying condition such as lung disease or skin cancer.  In some cases, nails can become painful, discolored, and deformed.  Without proper treatment, certain nail disorders can lead to loss of the nail, or even serious complications in the areas surrounding the nail.  Dr. Seidenberg will examine your nail condition to determine the cause and the appropriate treatment.  Treatments may include oral or topical medications, medical nail trimming to treat deformities or injuries, and procedures to drain pus or other accumulations under the nail.  Dr. Seidenberg will also educate patients in proper care of the nails to prevent a relapse of the condition.

Causes of Nail Disorders What can be treated
Fungus Discolored nails
Bacteria Redness, warmth, pus and swelling
Trauma or injury Thick, misshapen
or curved nails
Skin conditions Damaged nails and nail beds
Underlying disease, such as lung disease or skin cancer Brittle nails
Normal changes due to aging Pain in nail and surrounding areas

While all procedures carry some risk and uncertainty, the treatment of hair and nail disorders is normally safe when performed by a qualified, experienced dermatologist.  Dr. Seidenberg will meet with you to assess your condition and discuss your options for treatment, including any possible side effects that you may experience.  Request an appointment online or call today to set up a consultation with Dr. Seidenberg.
