Skin Cancer Treatments

Every year, more than a million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States.  It’s estimated that one in every five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer in their lifetime.  Most skin cancers are easily treated when detected early.  In order to ensure healthy skin, Dr. Seidenberg recommends that patients take precautions to prevent skin cancer, follow a careful screening routine to ensure early detection, and discuss treatment options with an experienced dermatologist.

Prevention Early Detection Treatment Options
Limit sun exposure, especially during peak daylight hours (11am-4pm) Self-screen for changes in moles and other skin growths Many cancers can be removed easily in the office, depending on the size, location and type of skin cancer
Wear a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection Have your doctor check any changes or skin irregularities Actinic Keratoses “Pre-Cancers” can be frozen off or shaved off
Use sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher that offers both UVA and UVB protection Schedule annual full body skin cancer screenings with your doctor Many skin cancers can be removed by a 5 minute "scrape and burn" procedure
Apply sunscreen before going outside, and reapply every two hours Ask about mole mapping Some skin cancers are excised (cut out and stitched up) in the office after a numbing injection
Some patients may be referred to a “Mohs Surgeon”, Colleague or other specialist, expecially for liaisons on the face.

While all procedures carry some risk and uncertainty, the removal of most common skin cancers is normally safe when performed by a qualified, experienced dermatologist.  Dr. Seidenberg will meet with you to assess your skin cancer and discuss all your options for treatment, including any possible side effects that you may experience.  In some cases, Dr. Seidenberg will refer you to a “Mohs surgeon” colleague or other specialist for treatment of your skin cancer.  Request an appointment online or call today to set up a consultation with Dr. Seidenberg.
