Botox for First-Timers: Tips for a Comfortable and Successful Experience

There’s no 21st-century aesthetics success story like Botox® Cosmetic. A safe and minimally invasive treatment that reduces the appearance of certain facial lines and wrinkles, Botox and similar neuromodulator products accounted for nearly 9.5 million procedures in 2023 alone.

If you haven’t tried the expression line-reducing power of Botox, it’s time to visit dermatologist Roy Seidenberg, MD, to learn more about this revolutionary no-downtime injectable process that smooths the appearance of selected expression lines that prematurely age your appearance.

As you take the plunge for the first time, here’s what you need to know to prepare for your session and enjoy the benefits in the months after your treatment.

Effective and safe

One of the most tested aesthetic treatments ever, Botox was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April 2002. Today, Botox is approved to treat frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet, platysma bands, and vertical lines between the neck and jaws.

Despite Botox being based on the naturally occurring botulinum type A toxin, dilution and purification make it a safe and gentle way to ease expression muscle activity. It’s in these muscles that expression line wrinkles and lines form.

While aging skin shows the shape of these muscles more clearly, expression line problems don’t originate with the skin. As Botox relaxes expression muscles, your skin smooths out with them.

Tips for first-timers

Here are our guidelines for first-time Botox clients. Consider each, and then call us to book a consultation so we can answer any remaining questions you might have.

  1. Be clear on your aesthetic goals: know what you want to change about your appearance so we can help you achieve the desired results.
  2. Choose a qualified provider: board-certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons know the anatomy necessary to pinpoint key muscles for treatment.
  3. Develop a treatment plan together: agree on a Botox plan with your provider so you know what to expect.
  4. Prepare yourself: consider avoiding alcohol, blood thinners, or dietary supplements that may increase the chances of bruising around Botox injection sites a week before your session.
  5. Know what to expect from the procedure: the needles used to inject Botox are fine, so you’ll feel only light pinching, which is usually well-tolerated. The number of injections depends on your plan.
  6. Aftercare: you can return to your normal routine immediately after your treatment, except for vigorous exercise for one day, which might cause your Botox injections to spread unpredictably.
  7. Understand the Botox cycle: You won’t see immediate effects. Botox takes several days to reach full effect, which lasts up to about four months before slowly fading.

Botox is safe and predictable when used as directed by an experienced practitioner. Contact Roy Seidenberg, MD, in Murray Hill, New York City, by phone or online to request a consultation today and enjoy the benefits of Botox throughout the spring and summer.
